Do you want to tell stories about issues that matter to young people in Jackson?

The Jackson Youth Newsroom will bring together high school students from across the capital city to build a reliable news source by and for young people. This hands-on internship will teach students journalistic writing, research, interviewing, editing, and marketing skills, with an emphasis on audio production. With guidance from adult staff and mentors, students will work collaboratively to report important stories on issues that matter to them and their peers. As municipal elections approach, the Jackson Youth Newsroom will help amplify the voices of Jackson teens at a critical moment for civic dialogue about the city’s future.

Eligibility

The program is open to current 10th-12th graders enrolled in Jackson high schools. Students must live in the Jackson city limits. Students should have a strong passion for writing and storytelling but do not need any prior journalism experience.

Schedule and Location

The program will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-6 p.m. at The Bell's office in downtown Jackson. The program will not meet on holidays or during school breaks.

Timeline (subject to change)

• December 1 – Application closes

• December 12 – Decisions announced

• December 17 – Orientation

• January 7 – Program begins

• May 1 – Program ends
